Women’s Box Lacrosse Debuts at NAIG

Five Teams Participate In Tournament

The North American Indigenous Games held a women’s box lacrosse tournament for the the first time.

Five teams from across Canada and New York participated in the Games’ U19 tournament. Female field lacrosse has been commonplace for many years, but girls could only play box lacrosse by joining boys teams. The popularity of women’s field lacrosse led to the inclusion of the women’s tournament in the 2017 NAIG.

The triennial NAIG, held this year in Toronto, is a sporting and cultural festival celebrating the Indigenous Peoples of North America. Lacrosse, first developed by the Haudenosaunee, has traditionally been a men’s sport in Indigenous communities.
