NLL Expands to San Diego
Team Launches in 2019
The National Lacrosse League will add an expansion team in San Diego for the 2019 season.
The expansion team will play at the Valley View Casino Center, shared with the San Diego Gulls (American Hockey League) and San Diego Sockers (Major Arena Soccer League), and is owned by billionaire Joe Tsai. Tsai played lacrosse for Yale University in the 1980s.
The San Diego expansion puts the NLL at 10 teams, the most since the 2011 season, and the first expansion team since the Boston Blazers joined in 2009. It is the first team in California since the San Jose Stealth relocated to Everett, Washington, in 2009.
It is also the first expansion team under commissioner Nick Sakiewicz, who joined the league in 2016. In his tenure, Sakiewicz has stated a desire for expansion, including a return to Philadelphia. Other expansion rumors include Edmonton, New York, and Boston.
