Too Much Caffeine Harms Performance

Cut Back To Maintain Benefits

While caffeine can improve sports performance, too much can be detrimental.

A new study suggests that the excess consumption of caffeine, such as several cups of coffee, can cause the body to become desensitized to the positive effects caffeine has on sports performance. Caffeine has been shown to provide increased endurance and muscle strength.

The study, performed by Dublin City University in Ireland, showed that low caffeine consumption had little impact on the performance of sprinters compared to those who consumed a lot, who showed declining performance.

The researchers suggest cutting back on caffeine consumption to maintain the benefits of caffeine, particularly in the leadup to a sporting event.
