Mexico City Will Join G League in 2020

League’s First Mexican Team

The Capitanes de Ciudad de México will join the NBA G League for the 2020-21 season.

The team, which translates to “Mexico City Captains”, will transfer from Mexico’s premier basketball league where it has been playing since 2017. The Capitanes made it to the playoffs in each of their first two seasons in the league, ending both as runner-up after losing in the championship. Unlike the other teams in the G League, Mexico City will operate without an NBA affiliate, independently building their own roster.

Mexico City will be the G League’s 29th team. It’s the first team in Mexico and second outside the U.S. after the league added Raptors 905 in Mississauga, Ontario, in 2015. It’s also the first time the league has added an existing team from another league since four teams joined from the Continental Basketball Association in 2006.
